A couple is lounging on the beach thousands of miles from their home and can change the thermostat or turn lights off at the touch of a button. In the past five years, technology advancements in home security and home monitoring apps has skyrocketed. Whether you want basic controls or complete surveillance, there’s an app to ease your mind.

Here is our list of some of our favorite security camera apps for Android and iOSPhones.


1. FrontPoint Mobile 

Pros:

  • Arm and disarm your system
  • Get up-to-the-second email, text or push notifications for alerts you select
  • View streaming or recorded video footage
  • Control lights, locks and thermostats in your home
  • Works with all operating systems

Pitfalls:

  • You must be a FrontPoint customer and have a FrontPoint home security system

2. Vivint Sky 

Pros:

  • Program and preset thermostat
  • Lock and unlock doors
  • View live video of your home
  • Arm and disarm your system
  • Add or remove users

Pitfalls:

  • You must be a Vivint customer
  • Does not work with Blackberry

Pitfalls:

  • Alarm.com’s technology isn’t made specifically for your exact home security system

6. i-Security

Pros:

  • You can turn your home computer into a security camera
  • Snap photos from the video stream

Pitfalls:

  • Can be slow to respond
  • Apt to shut down occasionally
